Bluetooth Low Energy

Mar 6, 2018

Bluetooth low energy (BLE) is simply a form of Bluetooth that uses less energy. It is an environmentally friendly form of Bluetooth that has been developed specifically to help facilitate IoT. BLE although not having a long-read range, is now catching up with the Bluetooth Classic’s range specification. It is one of the most promising protocols for communication between IoT devices, because it is supported in smartphones and its low-power consumption makes it a viable option. There are multiple applications that BLE can assist with and a wide range of devices that use it to optimise efficiency.

Beacons are one way of utilising BLE to improve efficiency and business optimisation such as smart energy systems. These beacons can be integrated into a cloud based infrastructure and use BLE to provide real time data on the condition of machines, tracking of key assets and workplace optimisation. Beacons can be fully integrated into your existing electronics system and, with the assistance of mobile apps, can provide alerts, advertisements or workflow management. Beacon technology can be integrated into establishments quickly and easily and doesn't need complicated wiring.

Another possible application for BLE is for physical key management. Managing traditional keys can be very difficult, especially with the costs required to replace locks when multiple keys go astray. Now BLE technology has allowed for the ability to manage keys in a much better way. Users can now be set permissions so that they can only get through certain locks with their key at certain times of the day. Permissions can be updated on the keys by updating the permissions in the cloud back end and then connecting the key to a smartphone or network connected device. This means that individuals in your organisation only require one key to be able to get where they need to be.

BLE also can be used for access control so users can use a smartphone credential instead of a physical card. Employees can use their smartphone, tablet or wearable to access doors, gates, networks and more. This new solution for access control greatly improves user convenience in today’s mobile-first world, as well as makes your organization look more modern and professional. Again, this solution allows for the creation, management, issues and provisioning of credentials individually or as part of a larger batch, saving issuers time and effort in managing access control.

These are some of the possible applications of BLE that can be implemented to improve productivity and performance of your business. If you have any questions or would like to know more please get in contact and we’ll be happy to help.
